The Latest 2025 Social Media Statistics – Key Trends and Insights

Feb 28, 2025

The world of social media is constantly evolving, and the latest Digital 2025 Report from We Are Social has unveiled some fascinating trends. With 5.24 billion active social media users worldwide, the landscape is bigger and more influential than ever. In this blog, we’ll dive into the key insights from the report, including user behaviour, platform rankings, and engagement trends.

Global Social Media Usage Continues to Grow

Community Notes Replace Fact-Checkers:

Social media usage has increased 4.1% year-on-year, fueled by improved connectivity, smartphone adoption, and internet accessibility. This trend has been consistent over the past decade, proving that social media remains a fundamental part of daily life.

The average person now spends 2 hours and 21 minutes per day on social media. However, in the UK, this figure is slightly lower at 1 hour and 40 minutes—still a significant chunk of daily screen time.

Why Do People Use Social Media?

Understanding why users turn to social media can help brands create content that resonates. The top two reasons in 2025 are:

  1. Staying connected with loved ones – Social media’s primary function remains personal connection.
  2. Filling spare time – Many users scroll social media while waiting for appointments, commuting, or unwinding. This explains the success of entertaining and engaging content, as people actively seek distractions and escapism.

Most Popular Social Media Platforms in 2025

There’s a difference between favourite and most used platforms:

  • Instagram is the world’s favourite platform among users aged 16+.
  • WhatsApp is the most used platform in the UK, having overtaken Facebook.

While some may not consider WhatsApp a social media platform, its group chats, broadcast channels, and business features make it a crucial marketing tool. Brands should consider leveraging WhatsApp for customer service, updates, or community engagement.

Platform-Specific Insights & Trends

The Metricool 2025 Social Media Study revealed some surprising shifts:

  • LinkedIn engagement is skyrocketing, with a 99% increase in interactions and a 122% rise in clicks.
  • Instagram reach is up by 21%, and reels continue to dominate engagement.
  • X (formerly Twitter) is seeing a sharp decline in activity, with post frequency down 38% and engagement dropping 29%.
  • TikTok watch time is up 71%, despite ongoing uncertainty about a potential US ban.

What This Means for Marketers

With WhatsApp’s rise, businesses should explore its marketing potential. LinkedIn’s surge in engagement suggests an opportunity for B2B brands, while Instagram remains a powerhouse for content marketing. Meanwhile, declining engagement on X might indicate that brands should reassess their strategy on the platform.
