Latest Threads Updates: New Features and Engagement Tools

Mar 16, 2026

Threads continues to introduce new features at a rapid pace.

Since its launch, the platform has steadily expanded its functionality as Meta works to strengthen Threads as a competitor in the text-based social media space.

Recent updates include direct messaging, new feed personalisation tools and improved integration with Instagram.

If you are experimenting with Threads as part of your social media strategy, these updates could make the platform significantly more useful.

Threads Continues to See Strong Growth

Despite being a relatively new platform, Threads has seen strong growth and engagement.

Many users are becoming more active on the platform as the experience improves and new features are introduced.

One of the biggest advantages is the close connection between Instagram and Threads. Users can easily move between the two platforms and share content across both.

However, one limitation still remains. At the moment, it is not possible to create a Threads account without linking it to an Instagram profile. Many users have expressed interest in seeing this change in the future.

Threads Launches Direct Messages

One of the biggest updates is the introduction of direct messaging within Threads.

Previously, if you wanted to message someone on Threads, the platform redirected you to Instagram.

Now, Threads has its own built-in messaging feature in the UK and other markets.

This makes it easier to:

– Contact customers directly
– Start conversations with creators or influencers
– Provide customer support through the platform

Messaging is an essential part of most social platforms, so this update brings Threads closer to feature parity with competitors.

The New “DM Me” Feature

Threads is also testing a feature designed to make messaging even easier.

Users can type phrases such as “DM me” or “message me” within a post or reply. The platform then automatically generates a clickable link that opens a private chat.

This shortcut removes the need for users to visit a profile before starting a conversation.

The feature is still in testing and has not yet rolled out everywhere, but it could make private conversations more central to the platform experience.

To prevent misuse, Threads has also introduced spam protection tools within messaging.

Messages from users who are not connected to you will appear in a message request folder, similar to the system already used on Instagram.

The Dear Algo Feature

Another interesting experiment is a feature known as Dear Algo.

This allows users to directly influence the content shown in their feed.

Users start a public post with the phrase “Dear Algo” followed by a preference. For example, they might ask to see more posts about a particular topic or less content related to another.

The system then adjusts the user’s feed for the following three days.

This feature is currently available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Compared with other platforms that simply allow users to mark content as “not interested”, Dear Algo gives users more control over how their feed evolve.

Improved Sharing Between Threads and Instagram

Threads and Instagram are becoming increasingly integrated.

Users can now share public Threads posts directly to Instagram Stories without leaving the app.

If you want to customise the shared post with stickers, effects or backgrounds, you can still move into the Instagram app to finish editing.

This cross-posting feature can help extend the reach of Threads content and introduce it to audiences who may not yet be active on the platform.

Why Replying to Comments Matters on Threads

Engagement behaviour on Threads is also revealing some interesting patterns.

A recent analysis of more than 128,000 Threads posts by social media scheduling platform Buffer found that replying to comments significantly boosts engagement.

On average, responding to comments increases engagement by around 42 percent.

This is higher than the impact seen on other social platforms.

For comparison:

– LinkedIn comments generate around a 30 percent engagement boost
– Instagram replies generate around a 21 percent increase
– X produces an average increase of 8 percent

This makes active conversation one of the most effective tactics on Threads.

Several well-known brands in the UK are already using this approach successfully. Accounts such as Innocent, Channel 4 and the National Trust regularly reply to comments and extend conversations on their posts.

Final Thoughts

Threads is still evolving, but the platform is clearly moving quickly to add new features and improve engagement tools.

The introduction of direct messages, feed personalisation tools and stronger integration with Instagram suggests that Meta is investing heavily in the platform’s development.

For marketers and brands experimenting with Threads, the key takeaway is simple.

Focus on conversations. Respond to comments. Use the platform to build genuine interactions with your audience.

As new features continue to roll out, Threads may become an increasingly important space for community-driven engagement.
