Can You Rearrange an Instagram Carousel After Posting?

Oct 3, 2025

One of the most-requested Instagram tweaks – rearranging a carousel after posting, isn’t here yet. In a recent Ask Me Anything, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed you can delete a slide from a carousel post after it’s live, but you can’t reorder slides (for now). It’s a similar situation on LinkedIn: once a PDF carousel is published, the order is locked.

As a social media manager, I’d love this flexibility. Sometimes you spot a stronger hook on slide two, or notice a simple upload error. Until reordering arrives, here’s how to make your carousels work harder.

Smart workarounds (that protect reach)

1) Front-load your hook – Treat slide 1 as your thumbnail ad: a clear promise, big readable headline, and a visual cue to “swipe”. If slide 2 is stronger, rebuild the set and repost rather than relying on edits that confuse.

2) Storyboard before you export – Map one key idea per slide (Problem → Insight → Steps → Proof → CTA). Export in numbered order (01, 02, 03…) to avoid upload mishaps.

3) Test your opener, not your whole deck – Create two versions of slide 1 and keep slides 2–10 identical. Post A on Monday, Post B on Thursday; compare saves, shares, and tap-through rate (slide 1 → slide 2). Keep the winner’s format for future sets.

4) Use analytics to refine the next carousel – If slide-level analytics appear for you (Instagram has tested this), note where drop-off happens and rebuild your next carousel with a stronger mid-story hook.

5) Add a clear CTA – Finish with a bold, singular action: “Download the checklist (link in bio)”, “Book a call”, or “Save this for later”. Pinned comments can reinforce the CTA post-publish.

Will reordering ever arrive?

Adam says the request is “registered”. Until then, plan for precision and use the tactics above to protect performance without constant re-uploads.
